Belgique

Inspired by the July Revolution in France, Belgians revolted against Dutch rule. Belgium declared independence in 1830 and established a constitutional monarchy with King Leopold I as the first king in 1831.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs are a popular fictional group of small, blue-skinned characters originally created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known by his pen name, Peyo.

Belgium is also known for its comic-style street art all around the country!

A Staple of Jazz Music

Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, was born in Dinant, Belgium, in 1814. Sax invented the instrument in the 1840s, and it went on to become a staple of jazz and classical music.

The Land of Chocolate

Belgium is world-famous for its chocolate, with over 2,000 chocolatiers in the country. Belgians have been making chocolate since the 19th century, and it's known for its quality and craftsmanship. Godiva is the most well know chocolate in Belgium.

Belgium is known for its impressive collection of castles, with over 3,000 dotting the landscape. These range from medieval fortresses to elegant Renaissance estates and luxurious residences.
